Google vs. Bing – The Showdown

Google has almost always been the determining fact when it comes to search.  Even Ask.com has begun using Google’s core engine.  Now Google has decided to seriously solidify their place at the top of Search Mountain…and they are king.  Enter Google’s new Caffeine…

I recently read a PDF circulated by Howie Schwartz, Internet Marketing Guru, and came across some fascinating information regarding Google and Bing.  Search engines tend to focus on some key aspects of search to make it faster, more effective, and an overall better experience for users.  Considering this, Howie and his team did some studies comparing current Google, Google Caffeine (Google’s amped up version) and Bing.  The results were staggering.

What do Search Engines Focus On?

As stated before search engines tend to focus attention on certain usability aspects to determine how to proceed with future search engines.  These have almost always been determined by Google but Microsoft and Bing have been attempting to rewrite these.  Let’s see how they measure up.

Search Engines Focus

There are four main areas that search engines tend to focus on listed below:

  • Speed – How fast results are returned
  • Accuracy -  How accurate are the results compared with search terms
  • Relevance – How relevant results are in terms of news, new goings-on, etc.
  • Comprehensiveness – Do you get a good amount of accurate, relevant, information or just a smattering of it?

Google, Bing, Yahoo!…Who do I choose?

According to Howie’s results Google originally returned more results in less time than Bing and Google Caffeine returned almost twice as many as Google original in less time.  And Google’s results were much more on target for relevance than Bing on both ends.

Based on this information I decided to dig a little deeper and see who else was researching this topic.  Mashable.com found nearly the same results as Howie did…and the same was found across the web.  I have not bothered with my own tests because I trust the resources I use and saw no point in repeating what has already been proven…just good scientific process.

So Will Microsoft Kill Yahoo! and Make Google Official King?

All of this on top of Microsoft’s recent dealings with Yahoo! have made many an individual skeptical as to where to turn for search.  Some still argue that Bing is better…but much of it relates to image search and honestly how many of us do major image searching?

With Bing’s poor results on search times compared with results returned and their relevancy, it seems almost a given that acquiring Yahoo! will simply kill the only search engine that give Google any real competition.

So Google will remain my search engine of choice and I will continue my SEO efforts accordingly.  It may be the wrong course of action but based on my research if you are doing anything different, your site and your clients sites will suffer greatly in the end.

  1. i have been evaluating the search results of Microsoft Bing compared to Google and they are comparable. Bing gives almost the same relevant search results just like Google.

  2. George,
I would love to see some of your results. As of your comment I decided to some digging on local searches in my area. Here is what I found:

I searched North Platte Web Design and found that while Bing originally returned 426,000 results, I refreshed the page and it only returned 302,000. Where did the other 124,000 go I wonder? And Bing’s top 50 results were items related to North Platte, NE, they were no design firms showing in the top 44 results except this site and Great Plains Marketing which isn’t even in the top 100 in Google.

Google only returned 54,300 results but 4 of the top five or six firms in the area showed up in the top 40. After refreshing the page it still returned 54,300 And when looking at local business listings, Google returns 3 of the top firms while Bing only shows 1.

Now when talking relevant material it seems even with a local search in a fairly rural area Google out does Bing.

  3. Bing search engine gives almost the same search results as Google. Looks like Google will now have a tough competition when it comes to search engine technology.

  4. Bing does give search results much like Google but i would have to say that Google still gives more relevant search results

  5. i am using both Bing and Google and i think both search engines give relevant search results. i would still prefer Google though, because it gives a little bit more relevant search results than Bing.

  6. my default search engine is Yahoo but now i am using BING because it is much better than Yahoo. i heard that Bing search engine would power Yahoo search also.

  7. i think that Bing is not as good as Google. Google would still index new websites faster than Bing. Microsoft would still need a lot of catching to do with GoogleBot.

  8. I use both Bing and Google search engine and i dont see much difference in their search results. I use google for searching hard to find academic topics and Bing for general search.
